It’s all about being prepared, John Zimmel says, and research plays a big part of that.

Research is critical, he adds, but it’s not the only thing. Watch out who you accept advice from, John Zimmel says. “Don’t accept advice from just anybody,” he explains, “since there’s a lot of well-meaning advice out there that’s totally incorrect.” John Zimmel says he recommends new entrepreneurs find someone to talk to who has done it already. “I’d look for someone in the same field you’re entering,” he says. Since competitors are often reluctant to share their ideas with someone new coming in, be creative when seeking advice. “For example, if your business is local,” John Zimmel says, “contact someone in a distant state for help. I’d do this by looking for an industry organization that you’re both connected to, or even use LinkedIn,” he adds.

Even with expert help, one of the most important things to watch for when first starting out is your budget, John Zimmel says. “I’ve seen so many people that say you need an office with all the equipment or a state-of-the-art computer network system when all you really need is a laptop to get started, he adds.

It’s finding the difference between what is needed and what is wanted, he says. Get only the things that you really need, and be careful with your money, John Zimmel explains. You might need extra money for more advertising, he adds, to replace the first round of ads that don’t work, for example. John Zimmel says he has seen some people spend thousands on things like stationery and business cards for an online business — things that just weren’t necessary. “It’s smart to keep some money in reserve,” he says.

Another thing to watch out for are people who try to sell you things, John Zimmel says. For example, you may be told certain software is a necessity, or that you must have a professional website, he adds. With most of the businesses starting up today, many of them can be done from home without all these things, he says. “If you have the skills and the contacts and are able to put in the time it takes to develop relationships, the rest will fall into place,” explained John Zimmel.

“I always get asked how often to post to social media,” said Zimmel. “And it varies from business and industry. But whatever you choose, be consistent. Best practices say to post at least three times a week, but once you have a routine down, make sure to review your page’s social analytics. That will tell you the timeframe when most of your followers are on social media and when they are most actively engaging with content–and that’s when you want to be posting,” says John Zimmel.

3) Engage with Your Audience

“Interacting with your audience is key to keep current followers engaged and in attracting new followers,” said Zimmel. “Reply to questions in the comments section. Share blog posts. Run contests that encourage sharing and liking your page. Treat digital connections like you would when forming face-to-face connections,” John Zimmel explained.

4) Be Transparent and Authentic

“Millennials and Generation Z-ers are big on calling out companies,” said Zimmel. “But they also respect companies that take accountability and act genuine. Should an issue or viral criticism come up, come out in front of it and remedy the best you can using transparency. Being insincere or in denial will cost you serious credibility and will ultimately hurt your bottom line,” Zimmel says.

“Oversharing of content can turn off your followers,” said John Zimmel. “Too much posting can look desperate, and frankly, be annoying. Have a lot of content? Schedule it. And stick to no more than two posts a day as a general rule.”

2) Don’t Overuse Hashtags

“An excessive amount of hashtags are irritating to followers,” said Zimmel. “No one reads them and the more strategic you are with them, the better. Use no more than five hashtags and be relevant.”

3) Don’t Use Poor Grammar

“Spelling mistakes, poor grammar, and hard to read sentences reduces your credibility as a brand,” said John Zimmel. “Don’t quickly type up a caption and hit send without careful proofreading. I like to create the caption in a document to track character count and spelling before posting on social.”

4) Don’t Share the Same Message Over and Over

“Don’t be lazy and share the same content over and over again,” said Zimmel. “This can seriously impact your brand in a negative way. You can repurpose content, but don’t copy and paste. First, thank you, John, for taking the time to chat. Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started on your entrepreneurial journey?
It actually started while on a mission trip. I was tasked with doing the video and fell in love with it. There are so many small, but significant moments a camera can capture. It’s a rush to nail that perfect shot. I was immediately addicted.John Zimmel of Greenwich

What kind of video production projects have you gotten to do?
My video production business, Nameless Productions, has allowed me to meet a lot of great people that I never would have met and be involved in some really fun projects, like shooting for the Guinness Book of World Records for highest pogo jump and New York Fashion Week. I’ve gotten to meet the World Champion Skimboarder, Austin Keen and capture some really cool stuff for him as well.

What led you to start your other media companies, Grass Fed Audio and West 35 Media?
After I started Nameless Productions, I realized there was a real gap between clients receiving the video and using the content to its highest potential. So many people and personal brands don’t know how to properly promote themselves or attract customers through social media. It’s also a big-time issue, which is where West 35 comes in. We take that over so businesses can focus their energy on growing and serving their customers.

Grass Fed Audio sort of came about as an accident. A friend needed help recording some music. I had some audio equipment, we produced some great music and then it grew from there. Now, we have a full studio where we produce albums, provide audio for live events, and offer creative consulting to budding artists. We have a lot of fun since we get to jam out and experiment with a variety of sounds.

What’s next for John Zimmel?
Right now, I am focused on expanding. I now have two locations in Florida and Connecticut. It’s wild to think I’ve come this far. But I love what I do and can’t wait to grow to more locations and help more interesting people and businesses.
